The Cayman islands in the Caribbean tend to be overshadowed by their bigger neighbors, but I like the intimate sound of them and I'd love to go on a Cayman vacation. Christopher Columbus was the first tourist, when he first spotted them in 1503, but they are a United Kingdom territory. Therefore, they drive on the left side of the road. The Caymans are made up of three islands, Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. There is plenty to do here if you want to be active. Personally, I'd look forward to sipping my Pina Colada at the end of the day, and watch the sun set over the bay.

White sands and duty free shopping are very appealing. Holidaymakers like to shop for crystal, china, perfume, watches and jewelry in the duty free shops. The local currency is the Cayman Islands dollar. Temperatures average 80F in summertime and 75F in the winter. That should be hot enough for most people. Until a few years ago, I used to live just a short two-hour
drive away from Las Vegas. It was no big deal for me to hop
in my car on the weekends and hit the Strip for a little

Exciting Disneyland Vacation

Though we were not big travelers, and though I couldn’t fathom
the heat in southern California at that time of year, when my
fiancé asked me where we should go on a short, affordable
honeymoon, I suggested a Disneyland vacation. So what that
we were grown adults. So what that neither of us cared for
intense rides that make you throw up or standing in lines that
seemed to threaten hours of misery. We made plans for our
Disneyland vacation, foregoing the Disneyland hotel (in favor
of cheaper digs, as we would only be in the room to shower and
sleep), and deciding to drive (as we were only a few hundred
miles away).

I love amusement park environments: I love the people, who have
let their hair down and let go of formalities, temporarily; I
love the scenes to observe and enjoy; and I love the country
fair snacks that one typically indulges in only once or twice
a year—the fudge, the hot fudge sundaes in giant waffle cones,
the cotton candy…. When I got to the gates, to begin my
two-day Disneyland vacation, however, I thought I might change
my mind. There were hundreds of people, not so much crowded
and ready to burst through the entrance in excited, frenzied
television commercial joy, but still, in great suffocating
numbers. But, my apprehension was assuaged when the gates did
open and the people disbursed, walking with plenty of space
between us into the park, immediately going into the closest
food or rest stop building or walking into the building where
Abe Lincoln gives the Gettysburg Address. (If you have made
a long drive right before beginning your Disneyland vacation
and are parched, tired, and of course gullible, the wax figures
become so alive for you it is startling…. A great way to start
your Disneyland vacation experience, which is surreal at most
times, anyway!)

My new husband loved Michael Jackson at that time. He imitated
Michael, performed singing and dancing to his albums, and was
extremely excited to see the “new” 3-D movie with Michael and
his troupe performing “Thriller”. I dreaded the lines, but
was soon surprised and corrected: not only was the wait
tolerable, but the entry after the wait was manageable: those
staffed at Disneyland’s theatre instructed (and, where necessary,
insisted) each person entering move all the way to the far
side of the theatre, sitting in the next available seat,
orderly and successively…not just running to any old seat,

parts of the casino, under the Eiffel Tower! From the outside
of the casino building, you see the Tour d’Eiffel to scale,
built as it is around and atop the Paris Las Vegas hotel and
casino. Inside, you are at the ground floor of inside the legs
of the great and one-of-a-kind architectural phenomenon.

Maybe, though, I should digress before I start speaking in
tongues I have no business (or skill) speaking. Other Las Vegas
hotel delights abound. As you likely have read about, seen, or
heard about, many of the Las Vegas hotel and casino
accompaniments and structures simulate a place somewhere in the
world. The Las Vegas hotel that does this is usually on the
strip (in the center of town, that is), and boasts such thematic
likenesses that when you drive or walk through the center of the
area, you feel as if you are a world-traveler, visiting modified
or reduced countries, cities, and cultures. New York is
represented in black and white and post-mod pop (and when I was
there, after 9-1-1, sadly, the New York, New York had constructed
a long fence of donated t-shirts belonging to firefighters,
victims, and survivors and residents. The t-shirts, numbering
in the thousands, had signatures and sayings and notes of thanks
and empowerment…making for the whole viewing and visit experience
one of true realism, not just imitation Las Vegas hotel-style).
The Bellagio is water wonderful; the Luxor is mystical Egyptian;
the Monte Carlo is classic; and the Venetian is Italian magic.

Of course, to visit Las Vegas hotel history, one must not be so
dazzled by the new that one misses the Rat Pack and Elvis days
recapitulated at every older Las Vegas hotel and casino from the
Flamingo to Ceasar’s top the MGM to The Sands. But I tell you
what: I bet if Frank and Elvis and Sammy and George were alive
and in town, they would swing by to catch an O show or drop in
at the Paris for a quick spin of the roulette. Mais oui.

My favorite beach vacation destination personally, is Maui. There is this lovely, almost palatial house that we rent every year, me and the wife and our two kids, Kim and Jennifer (they're twins.) Our beach vacation rental is located not far from town, if we want to go there for a delicious seafood dinner, and yet it is far enough to let us enjoy the serenity of inhabiting the beach by ourselves.
